JESILIOUS, FLAME OF PAIN – 35MM

Jesilious, Flame of Pain, a 35 mm figure

A fantasy figure from the AK Interactive brand. The 35 mm is a statement of the size of the figure, not a scale. The figure arrives unpainted and with no color scheme laid down, so the character of the result is yours to decide. For a subject of this kind it is worth working with glazes, that is with transparent layers built one on top of another.

Glaze layers: how a rich color appears without blotches

A glaze is paint thinned to the point where it does not cover on its own and only shifts the tone of whatever lies beneath it. That is exactly why it is the best tool for smooth transitions. Lay down an opaque base, let it dry, and then build heavily thinned paint over it in many passes, each time only on the part of the area you want to shift. Every single pass is almost invisible, but after ten or twelve you get a transition with neither a beginning nor an end. Two rules decide whether it will look good: the glaze has to be genuinely thin, otherwise it leaves a hard line at the edge, and every layer has to dry, otherwise the next stroke dissolves the previous one again. Build saturation with glazes of the same color over each other, not with a single thick layer; a thick layer covers faster but floods the engraved detail and the shade then looks flat.

Painting tips

• Always start with a thin primer, or the glazes will not hold evenly on the surface.
• Mix the glaze on a palette, not on the figure itself.
• Wipe the brush before it touches the figure so that no drop runs onto it.
• Check the saturation in daylight, as glazes deceive under artificial light.

Who the figure is for

• For figure painters who want to practice working with glazes and transitions.
• For collectors of fantasy subjects who display individual pieces.
• For modelers looking for a shorter project between two large builds.

The figure is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
