A dark gray matching the number 36081 of the American Federal Standard. It is used in modern low visibility schemes on military vehicles and aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
The five-digit numbers in the Federal Standard are not random. The first digit describes the degree of sheen, and a three in its place means a flat finish. The second digit places the shade in a color group, and a six belongs to gray tones. The remaining three digits then distinguish the individual shades within a group. The designation 36081 is therefore read the same way by an army supply officer and by a modeler: a flat dark gray.
Dark grays of this kind came in after the colorful camouflage disappeared from military aircraft and the point became to make a machine stand out as little as possible against the sky and the airfield. It serves on the surfaces of modern combat machines, on weapon covers and on the parts where the contrast against a lighter gray is meant to be only slight. It also works well as a dark base under procedures involving the preshading of panels.
A flat coat has one weakness: its rough microrelief holds small bubbles under a carrier film and a milky rim then stays around the subject. Modelers also like to mix intermediate steps from this gray with lighter tones, in order to set covers and hatches apart from the surrounding skin. Before applying markings, therefore, coat the area with gloss varnish and bring the flat look back only at the end. It is thinned with the lacquer thinner of this family of paints, the package holds 10 ml and honest stirring is needed before spraying.
