A shade so dark that in period photographs it often looks like black was among the first standardized colors of the Luftwaffe. It covered the upper surfaces of twin-engine machines and of early fighters and, together with the lighter dark green, formed the hard-edged pattern known as splinter: fields with straight edges and no soft transition between them. After 1941 it retreated from the backs of aircraft, yet it did not disappear entirely, because propeller blades and spinners went on being painted with it. So anyone building late machines needs it too.
It appears most often on the machines of the first war years, on dive bombers, heavy fighters and reconnaissance aircraft. Because it really is dark, it easily swallows raised detail on a model. A proven procedure is to spray the area evenly, let it dry and then lighten the middle of each panel slightly with the shade plus a drop of white or sand paint. The propellers, conversely, should be left in the pure tone without lightening, whether you are building a machine of 1939 or one from the end of the war.
The paint dries to a semi-matte finish and forms a thin, mechanically very durable layer on which decals settle well. The base is an organic solvent, so work in a ventilated area and protect your airways. It is thinned with the product intended for this range; stir the contents of the bottle every time before drawing from it and lay the paint down with a gun in several light coats.
