The silver of this family stands or falls with the preparation of the surface. Metallic pigments are flat flakes that settle parallel to the base when sprayed and mirror it. Every groove left by sanding, every fingerprint and every remnant of putty is therefore emphasized after spraying instead of disappearing. It pays to sand the surface with fine paper and degrease it beforehand.
The pigment in the bottle settles to the bottom faster than in the opaque tones. Before work the contents have to be stirred thoroughly, ideally with a few balls inside, and the stirring has to be repeated during a longer session. It is again thinned with the solvent of the same brand and sprayed rather in a lighter coat from a greater distance, because an over-wet surface loses the metallic effect.
The uses are wide: natural metal on the surfaces of aircraft, unprotected edges and worn areas on vehicles, the wear surfaces of running gear, barrels, tools and chains in a diorama. The shade can be toned down with a thin translucent veil of smoke or blue paint and the individual panels separated in that way.
Masking tape is not recommended on a fresh metallic coat, as the metal layer tends to come away with it. It is safer to let the surface cure for a few days or to use a tape of lower tack and to varnish over only once it is sealed.
An interesting option is to use this shade as a base for the paint chipping technique. A chipping medium is applied over the metal layer, then the opaque paint, and once dry the paint is uncovered in places with a dampened brush. The chips created this way look more natural than dotting them onto a finished model, because they follow the places of real wear. It serves equally well as a base under the translucent blue or brown veils that suggest heated metal on exhausts and barrels.
