About product

Vallejo Model Color Natural Steel - acrylic metallic (17 ml)

Natural Steel is a metallic shade from the Model Color range by the manufacturer Vallejo. It is a water thinnable acrylic, thinned with water or acrylic thinner and never with lacquer or synthetic thinner. Model Color is a thicker range developed for brush application; it can be airbrushed, but it has to be thinned first, which is where it differs from the Model Air range, ready to spray straight from the bottle. It comes in a 17 ml dropper bottle. It is not a kit but a modeling paint.

Natural Steel versus Oily Steel: how they differ

Vallejo offers two close steel shades and confusing them is a common mistake. Natural Steel is natural steel, a cleaner and lighter metallic tone with no blue tinge. It suits metal that is neither greasy nor grimy: exposed metal surfaces, the edges of axes and knives, tools, weapon barrels, polished parts. Oily Steel, by contrast, is noticeably darker, leans to blue-gray and imitates metal with a hint of an oil film, that is machinery in service. Put simply: Natural Steel is clean and polished steel, Oily Steel is greasy, worked steel. The lightest of the three is then Silver.

Use

  • Exposed metal surfaces, fittings and ironwork
  • The edges of blades, tools, axes, shovels
  • Weapon barrels and muzzles, polished metal components
  • Worn spots and chipping on edges
  • Drybrushing the metal details of figures

Tips for applying a metallic

Heavy metallic particles settle at the bottom of the bottle, which goes double for dropper bottles, because the paint in them cannot be stirred with a brush. So shake the bottle thoroughly before every use; otherwise mostly binder with no pigment comes out of the dropper. Metallics also look better over a smooth, glossy base, because over a rough flat surface they lose their shine and look more like gray. They are also harder to overspray and cope badly with masking tape, which easily pulls them off. So apply them at the very end, after the other colors.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of military vehicles, figure painters and builders of aircraft who need a faithful shade of clean steel. A low odor acrylic also suits work indoors and beginners.

When spraying with an airbrush, provide sufficient ventilation and protect your airways with a respirator. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

Natural Steel is a cleaner and lighter steel tone, suited to blade edges, tools, barrels and polished metal surfaces. Oily Steel is darker, leaning to blue-gray, and imitates greasy metal in service (tank tracks, engines, machinery). If you build vehicles you will usually use both.

Yes, but not straight from the bottle. Model Color was developed for the brush and is thicker, so you have to thin it with water or acrylic thinner before spraying. If you want paint ready to spray without thinning, the Model Air range is intended for that.

The pigment of a metallic is heavy and settles at the bottom of the bottle. Shake the bottle thoroughly before every use, for a minute if need be. Otherwise mostly binder with no metallic particles comes out of the dropper.

It is a water thinnable acrylic, thinned with water or acrylic thinner, and fresh paint rinses out of a brush with water. Do not use lacquer or synthetic thinner.
