Vallejo earth pigments for terrain and dioramas

Powder pigments chosen in the shades of natural ground: dry earth, damp topsoil, a sandy embankment and decayed leaves. They come into their own everywhere a surface is to feel like soil rather than painted plaster: on a figure base, on a field road, on the slope of a cutting and on the boots and lower hem of the uniform of a figure that has walked through that terrain. They serve equally well on the wooden elements of a scene, to which they give a weathered cast.

Procedure on terrain

• leave the base tone darker under the pigment, as the powder lightens the area
• layer from the lightest tone to the darkest in shaded places
• mix the tone directly on the model, not in the container
• blend the edges out to nothing, as a hard transition gives away the artificial origin
• once finished, fix the area so that the powder does not fly off while being carried
• leave places clean in the final scene, as perfectly dusted terrain looks artificial

Who it suits

Intended for makers of dioramas, display scenes and bases under figures and vehicles. It also serves railroad modelers finishing a landscape and builders of natural scenes with no vehicles at all. Working with powders calls for neither an airbrush nor previous experience with shading, so even a beginner can reach for them; it pays to make the first attempts on an offcut and only then move to a finished scene.

The powder is very fine. Mix and apply it in a ventilated space, protect your airways and avoid a draft over an open package. Keep it out of the reach of children and always close the container carefully.
