Photo-etched ship stairs for ship models. According to the name they can be used across the range of scales from 1:75 to 1:200, that is, across the usual sizes of plastic kits as well as of card and wooden models. Etching allows a thickness a plastic part will never come close to, and it is precisely on stairs and treads that the difference shows at first glance: a plastic part looks like a beam, an etched one like a step. A stairway is moreover an element you see on the deck even from a distance, so it is worth starting there.
Separate the part with a fresh blade on a hard surface, not by breaking it out; then sand the remains of the tab flush with the edge using a fine file or a sanding stick. Make the bends in a bending tool or between the smooth jaws of pliers, always in one go and along the whole length of the edge, so that the bend is not wavy. It is bonded with super glue applied in spots, ideally with the tip of a wire; tube cements for plastic do not work here. Wipe off any excess glue before it dries; on an etched part it leaves a shiny mark that paint will not cover.
Wash and degrease the parts before painting, otherwise the paint holds poorly and rubs off during handling. Apply the base color in a thin coat, so that the edges are not lost. Fit the stairs only once the surrounding area is finished; they are sensitive to the touch and bend easily during masking. If the model is to receive a matte coat, spray it before the stairs are fitted and then merely tone the joints in with a brush.
A photo-etched part is supplied. The model, glue and paints are not included, unless stated otherwise.
