Styrene strip 2.00 x 2.00 x 350 mm — a pack of 9 pieces

Nine pieces of polystyrene strip of square cross-section two by two millimeters and 350 mm long. It is modeling material, not a kit and not an accessory for a particular model. The dimensions in the designation are millimeters, not a scale. In this range the number of pieces in a pack falls as the thickness grows, which is why there are nine here and not ten — for the individual rod it changes nothing.

What it is suited to

• Beams, posts and girders in dioramas and scenes
• Frames of crates, hatches and simple buildings
• The frame of larger objects, onto which thinner cladding is glued
• Firm spacers that hold large parts in the right position during a build
• Material for shaping your own parts — the strip takes deep sanding and drilling

Shaping and surface

A thicker strip can be worked with more than just cutting. It takes drilling right through, sanding into a wedge or rounding off the edges; work in several passes, though, and do not overheat the material, because fast sanding smears the plastic instead of removing it. It can be bent with heat — a strip warmed at a greater distance from a heat source softens and keeps the shape you let it cool into; close to the source, though, it scorches and the surface is spoiled. Make the cuts square and level the mating faces before gluing, as with a two millimeter cross-section every joint that does not seat shows at once. Prime before painting and reckon with the fact that larger areas need to be applied in thinner coats so that the texture you have created in the surface stays visible.
