About product

F-4 Phantom II in a caricature form - a Hasegawa Egg Plane kit

This kit belongs to the line of caricature, so-called egg models. It is not a scale model: the fuselage is shortened and inflated, the wings and tail surfaces are reduced and the whole aircraft is stylized into a cute shape, which is why no scale is given for it and why it is classed among egg models and cute models. The boxing is devoted to the markings of the 301st Squadron for the Phantom Forever 2020 event. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, with instructions and a decal sheet. The number of parts, the way the parts are joined and any stand are given in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The F-4 Phantom II is a twin-engine two-seat combat aircraft which spread from the 1960s to a number of operators and became one of the most produced jet aircraft of the postwar era. Characteristic features are the dihedral outer wing panels, the anhedral horizontal stabilizers and the robust structure. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force operated the type for long decades, and its gradual withdrawal was accompanied by a series of commemorative markings, among which is the Phantom Forever motif tied to 2020. Caricature models take these ceremonial motifs over and transfer them onto a simplified shape.

Building and painting tips

Caricature models have markedly fewer parts than scale kits, so they suit a quick build or a first model as well. Even so it pays to remove the parting lines and to sand the seams through, because they show clearly on small smooth surfaces. Paint with a brush or with an airbrush in thin coats; primer will help to even the surface out. Apply gloss varnish before the decals, because commemorative schemes tend to have large decals and silvered edges would form under them on a matte surface. Weathering usually makes no sense on a model of this kind; a clean and colorfully striking result suits its stylized nature better.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers looking for a quick and undemanding build
  • Collectors of caricature aircraft models and commemorative schemes
  • Beginners and younger modelers under supervision
  • Those who want to add a lighthearted piece to a display case beside scale models

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

None. It is a deliberately deformed caricature model for which no scale is given, because the proportions do not correspond to the real aircraft.

Yes. Caricature models have markedly fewer parts and a simpler build than scale kits, so they are among the suitable first projects.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The way the parts are joined is given in the enclosed instructions, so it is better to count on cement for plastic.

It is the designation of the commemorative scheme tied to the end of F-4 operations with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in 2020.
