Early fall is not brown. Green still prevails in the crowns, but yellow and orange patches already shine among it, and on every tree differently: a birch colors earlier than an oak, a solitary tree on a field boundary earlier than one in the middle of a wood. It is precisely this unevenness that the mixture captures, so a view gets an exact date without anything having to be written in.
If a modeler mixed three separate shades themselves, they would get either regular clumps or a gray from mixing that is too perfect. A ready mixture has the tones spread irregularly in the package already, so even a small torn-off tuft holds several colors at once and a crown never looks as if it had been painted from a single can.
When you build a fall scene, do not forget the ground. A tree whose leaves are coloring is losing them at the same time, so colored fallen leaves have to lie under the crown. A few torn-off crumbs of this mixture scattered into glue around the foot of the trunk do a scene a greater service than another layer in the crown and convince a viewer at once, because it is precisely this detail that is left out most often on models. The amount that fits on the tip of a knife is enough for it, and the work is done before the glue used on the crown has dried.
