What 400 grit means
400 grit is medium to fine. It takes off little but reliably smooths away the scratches left by a coarser abrasive. It is the typical grit for the stage just before filler primer or a base coat is applied, when it is a matter of the quality of the surface rather than the shape of the part.
For modelers who care about a smooth surface under paint, both on military vehicles, where unevenness hides worse than it seems, and on cars and aircraft with a gloss final coat. The board makes sense as an intermediate step in a set of several grits rather than as the only abrasive in a workshop.
Sanding produces a fine dust that must not be breathed in, so work in a well ventilated room. Free the surface thoroughly of dust before painting.
