German Grey – acrylic paint from AK interactive, the Quick Gen Color range

German Grey is a dark gray shade from the Quick Gen Color range. It is a water-thinnable acrylic that AK interactive mixes for painting figures and gaming models. The name is a designation of the shade from the manufacturer, not a promise of a match with a particular color standard. The dark cool gray suits uniforms, equipment and also vehicles in small scales, where pure black would flatten the shape.

A dried neck is the most common reason a bottle ends up spoiled

Paint in a bottle will last for years as long as the cap seals. The trouble is the neck: every time you take paint out, a thin film stays on the rim, it dries, and after a few sessions a hard crust builds up in the thread. The cap then no longer seats, air gets into the bottle and the paint starts to thicken from the surface down. Prevention takes five seconds. After every use, wipe the neck with a damp cloth or a paper towel and only then close it. Once a crust has formed, peel it off carefully with the tip of a knife and check that no flake has fallen inside. Hardened flakes will not dissolve in the paint and they make lumps when you brush it on.

Use

• Dark uniforms, equipment, straps and boots on figures.
• A base under lighter grays dry brushed on to pull out the edges.
• Applied with a brush; for an airbrush it has to be thinned.
• Mixed with white or a light gray of the same range for a smooth gradation of tone.
