Grey-Brown - AK interactive 3rd Generation acrylic paint

A bottled acrylic with a water-thinnable binder. Gray brown is a typical workhorse color, the one you reach for whenever something is to look worn but not dirty. It suits weathered wood, tarpaulins, canvas covers and packs, trodden earth, the rubber and fabric parts of equipment, and the thin layer of settled dust that takes the shine off a whole model.

Which surfaces it belongs on and how it behaves

Neutral gray brown tones are undemanding about the base - they go on over a light as well as a darker ground and need no white primer. Their main value is that they calm things down: mixed into a green, blue or brown that is too rich, they turn it into a color that looks as if it has seen real service rather than fresh out of the bottle. As a final, heavily thinned coat over a finished model they tie all the shades into one scene. Mix it only with acrylics of the same range.

Spraying with an airbrush

• For the final tie-in, thin the paint to an almost transparent state and spray from a greater distance as a fine mist.
• Work in tiny steps - an over-misted model is much harder to save than one you only have to go over once more.
• Heavily thinned paint tends to run: turn the model and do not hold the nozzle over one spot for long.
• Thinned acrylic lets the pigment settle in the cup, so stir it from time to time as you work.
• At the end, take the airbrush apart and flush it: the needle, the nozzle and the cup. Dried acrylic in the nozzle cone changes the spray pattern for every color that follows.

Store it in a well-closed bottle out of the reach of children. Ventilate when spraying and use respiratory protection. Do not flush paint residues down the drain.
