A gunport is a square opening in the side of a hull through which the barrel of a gun projected on historic sailing ships. On a model it is fitted as a frame with a lid that can be closed or left hinged upward. This accessory measures 7 x 7 mm and there are two pieces in the package. The material, the surface finish and whether the lid moves are stated on the packaging of the accessory.
Gunports are among the details of the side that catch the eye most on a model. Uniform spacing and matching frames reveal careful work at first glance, whereas irregularly cut openings spoil the impression of the whole hull. Series-made fittings solve exactly that problem: every piece has the same shape and size. They suit kits that do not hold gunport frames, repairs to older models and builds from your own documentation. Open lids also make it possible to show the gun barrels and to bring the side of the hull to life.
First mark out the placement of the gunports carefully along the whole length of the side and check that the line follows the deck rather than the upper edge of the planking. Cut the openings out step by step, rather smaller and then finished with a file than straight to size. Glue the frames with super glue and, when using super glue, take care that it does not run onto the planking, where it would stop the stain from taking. Do the painting before fitting, while the parts can still be handled with tweezers. On metal parts use a primer for metal surfaces, otherwise the paint rubs off. The inside of a gunport tends to be darker than its surroundings, which heightens the impression of depth.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without glue. It is not a ship kit, but individual fittings.
