A finished casting of a stone culvert for an HO layout. Outer dimensions of roughly 5.87 x 5.08 x 4.6 cm, and the surface is ready for toning with pigments.
Responsibility details are not available.
A culvert belongs among the least conspicuous and at the same time most necessary structures on a line. Where the roadbed of a railroad crosses a stream or a drainage ditch, the water has to get through, and a short arched or frame structure built right into the embankment serves for that. From the middle of the nineteenth century, construction gangs built them of quarried stone: the material was at hand, an arch carried the weight of the embankment and of a train passing over, and maintenance was limited to clearing the channel of washed-up debris now and then. It is precisely these small objects that still give away the age of a line better than a station building does.
The casting captures a stone face with a passage in the usual European as well as North American form. The outer dimensions are approximately 5.87 cm in width, 5.08 cm in depth and 4.6 cm in height, which corresponds to the ratio 1:87 and to the usual height of a model embankment. The surface carries a modeled arrangement of stones with joints, so after toning every block stands out on its own.
The casting is supplied in a uniform light tone without a surface finish. Liquid pigments of the Earth Colors line are advised for coloring, as they soak into the material and emphasize the joints. Go from the lightest tone to the darkest and wipe the excess off with a damp brush.
