About product

Plastruct – Hexagonal Profile, Width 0.5 mm, Length 250 mm

A precisely extruded profile made of light-colored polystyrene with a hexagonal cross-section, 0.5 mm wide and 250 mm long. This is a modeling material, not a kit — you do not get a finished model, but a raw stock from which you make your own details. It is sold as 1 piece.

Why a hexagon specifically

A hexagonal cross-section has one property no round or square profile can replace: slicing the rod into thin disks produces perfect bolt heads, nuts and rivet heads. Every slice is a precise hexagon with identical edges along the entire length of the rod, so a hundred bolts look like a hundred identical bolts. Cutting is the only operation needed — nothing has to be milled or shaped.

A width of 0.5 mm is the finest in the range. It suits microscopic bolts and nuts in 1:72 and 1:48 scale, small rivets, and fine technical details on landing gear, hinges and instruments. In larger scales it looks too subtle — reach for a thicker cross-section there.

Use

  • Sliced disks = miniature bolts, nuts and rivet heads in 1:72 and 1:48.
  • Fine technical details — hinges, couplings, bolt heads on engines and landing gear.
  • Thin rods and struts with a technical, not round, cross-section.
  • Imitating hydraulic fittings and threaded connections on small equipment.
  • Adding details to kits and scratch-built structures.

Working the material

Polystyrene is glued with ordinary modeling plastic cement (both thin liquid cement and classic super glue hold), with no need for special ABS chemistry. It is cut with a sharp knife or a fine saw; at this thickness, it is enough to score it with a scalpel and snap it. Sand the ends with fine sandpaper so the slice sits flat. We recommend a primer coat before painting; paint then holds much better on the smooth plastic.

Who it is for

For modelers super-detailing kits, for scratch-builders, and for anyone who needs a large number of perfectly identical miniature bolts in small scales.

The material is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package.

FAQ

Place the rod on a cutting mat and slice thin disks off it with a sharp scalpel — each disk is a finished hexagon, that is, a bolt head or nut. The thinner the slice, the lower the head. Then glue the disk in place with plastic cement.

It is polystyrene, so it holds with ordinary modeling plastic cement, including thin liquid cements applied with a brush that flow into the joint. No special ABS glue is needed.

For ordinary bolts in 1:35, this size will be too fine — a 1.0 mm or 2.0 mm profile suits better there. The 0.5 mm size is for small rivets and bolts in 1:72 and 1:48, or for very fine details in larger scales.

It is sold in units of 1, that is, one 250 mm rod. You can slice a large number of disks from it.
