Blood Moon Red lies at the dark end of the red group, just past a rich mid red. It is noticeably more muted than the signal shades and carries a touch of brown, so it does not look lacquered but rather like wool cloth or old canvas. In the chart it fills the role of a shadow red, that is a color with which folds are deepened without reaching for black.
Fantasy painters use it to shade cloaks, hoods and heraldic devices. On historical subjects it serves for uniform cloth, for leather straps and for the red elements of Russian and British equipment. Combined with brown it gives convincing dried blood on blades and on bandages. On vehicles it forms an intermediate step between a base red and a coat of rust.
Dark reds darken a good deal further as they dry than a fresh coat suggests, so judge the transitions only on a dry sample. The paint also takes thin glazes; just thin it to the consistency of skim milk and let it run into the grooves. For spraying, reach rather for the manufacturer's own thinner, which, unlike plain water, does not reduce the grip of the binder on the surface.
With a dark brown you get a convincing shadow in the seams of clothing, and with ocher, by contrast, cloth faded in the sun. On large areas it pays to use the shade as a base and bring the highlights up with a richer red rather than with white. White turns red toward pink quickly and the area loses the depth this tone offers.
