The package holds four finished conifers. The lowest piece measures 8.89 cm and the tallest reaches 13.9 cm, and it is precisely the graded height that does a planted group a good service: the growth then looks like a naturally grown wood rather than a row of identical copies side by side.
The trunk is pliable, so it can be turned or leaned before seating and thereby imitate a tree shaped by a slope or by the prevailing wind. The painting is done at the factory. The crown carries fine needles with darker and paler parts, thanks to which it does not read as one solid green mass but has an inner shadow.
On the underside of the trunk there is a pin for pushing into polystyrene, plaster or modeling compound. The disc supplied can be fitted and the tree then stands free without gluing. You will value that when laying out a scene, when you first try the arrangement, and also on portable layouts, where it is sensible to have taller growth removable.
The range of heights will suit a railroad layout as well as a diorama with military vehicles, where a conifer forms the edge of a wood or cover behind a field track. Because the crowns are finished by hand, the saturation of the green may differ slightly from one piece to another.
It pays to start from the tallest piece. That one decides where the eye will look, and the remaining three trees then fill the role of a transition to the surrounding terrain. The foot of the trunk is finally masked with a little litter or low greenery, so that the join with the base does not look like a sharply cut edge. A pair set close together, with the crowns slightly interlocking, looks more believable than four pieces set out at regular intervals.
