A flesh shade for the crews of camouflaged vehicles

A flesh shade is not a camouflage color and has nothing to do with the fields of a scheme. All the same it belongs in the kit of anyone who builds ground vehicles, because the figure of a commander in a hatch or a crew around a vehicle is the one thing that immediately tells the viewer the scale of the machine. A tank without a human figure is an interesting model; a tank with a figure is a scene. The second flesh tone in the palette also makes it possible to tell the individual crew members apart, so that they do not look as though they were cast from one mold.

How to use flesh on a vehicle

• On the faces and hands of the crew peering out of hatches and from the driver's station.
• On figures standing by the vehicle in a diorama, where the warm tone of skin forms a counterweight to the cool camouflage fields.
• As a second shade beside the first flesh tone, so that the crew of one machine differs in color.
• The matte surface keeps pace with the matte camouflage around, and the figure does not look like a foreign element.

A note on the shade

Flesh tones are laid on a figure in thin layers, and both shadow and light are built up gradually. That is exactly why it pays to have more than one flesh shade in a palette.
