Lemon Yellow (FS13655, ANA 505)

The color

A modeling paint from Hataka, from the Orange Line range. The shade is called Lemon Yellow, and the manufacturer gives two references for it: FS 13655 and ANA 505. FS is the American federal standard of color shades, ANA the older American aviation designation. Both numbers serve the same purpose: to make clear which original the shade comes close to, and to let it be compared across paint brands. With yellow tones that counts twice over, because the difference between two bottles carrying the same name is usually easy to see.

How to apply the paint

Stir the bottle thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles at the bottom. Choose the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions on the package, that is the thinner intended for this range. Yellow is among the worst covering shades of all: on a dark base it gets lost, and adding further coats only thickens it into blotches. It therefore pays to even the base out with a light primer first and only then to lay several thin coats of yellow onto it.

Where the shade comes into its own on a model

A saturated yellow is used on models on small areas rather than on a whole machine: on warning stripes, numbers, insignia, the tips of propeller blades, the insides of covers and similar details that are meant to be seen at first glance. A sharp transition between the yellow and the neighboring shade is made by a mask, not freehand. Let the paint set before you unmask the area, otherwise the edge tears.
