A cloth in 2400 grit

The transition between coarse leveling and polishing tends to be the place where work most often goes wrong. The value 2400 lies exactly there: it still removes the scratches from the previous step reliably, but it leaves a mark of its own that you have to hunt for against the light. In the nine-step range it is the third value in order.

The carrier is cloth, not paper. Thanks to that it takes repeated folding, it can be threaded onto a shaped stick or pulled through a narrow gap. Unlike a rigid pad it follows the shape of the part, so a convex surface stays convex and is not flattened in the middle.

Typical use

You can reach for it after sanding down the parting line on a fuselage, after leveling filler around a mating seam or when removing a small blemish in fresh varnish. It also serves well for taking the shine off a glossy surface before gluing or before applying another layer, because an evenly roughened surface accepts paint more readily.

Work in one direction and change direction only when you move to another step. With crossed strokes it is hard to tell when the previous scratch has really gone. With water and a drop of dish soap the work goes more smoothly and the surface does not clog.

Store the cloth separately from coarser grits so that a foreign grain does not transfer onto it. A single coarser grain can leave a scratch in a finished surface whose removal sets the whole procedure back two steps.

It also pays to wipe the surface with a dry cloth as you go and to look at it from different angles. A wet surface temporarily hides small scratches, and discovering them only after varnishing tends to be an unpleasant surprise.
