Abteilung 502 Light Grey - a modeling acrylic paint

A light gray shade from the Abteilung 502 acrylic line. A light neutral gray is among the hardest-working colors in a palette: it is applied on its own, serves as a base, as a lightening component and as the color for the highest highlights. The binder is acrylic and it is thinned with water or a thinner for acrylics, that is differently from the oil and enamel products of the same brand.

Lightening and a light base

Lightening a color with white is the quickest, but also the surest way to a chalky, parched tone. A neutral light gray shifts the shade toward the light and yet does not take its character away, so the result looks more natural, above all with earth and olive colors. The second application is as a base: a light gray base brings out imperfections in the surface before the color coat floods them, and at the same time helps shades that cover less well. On a light base a saturated red, yellow or blue comes up noticeably sooner than on a dark one. Anyone who wants a deeper and more muted result will reach for a darker base instead. Apply in thin coats, because with light grays a thick coat easily floods fine engraving.
