About product

Tamiya LP-63 Titanium Silver — lacquer paint, 10 ml

LP-63 Titanium Silver is a shade from the Tamiya Color Lacquer Paint line. It is therefore a lacquer, neither an acrylic nor an enamel — different chemistry, a different thinner, not interchangeable. It comes in a bottle with a volume of 10 ml and is thinned only with the lacquer thinner Tamiya LP-10, not with X-20A (that one is for acrylics) or X-20 (that one is for enamels). The shade is a metallic: a titanium silver tone, cooler and flatter than pure silver, closer to real titanium and polished steel. This is a modeling paint, not a kit.

Use

  • Metal surfaces and panels, bare metal on aircraft and equipment.
  • Engines, exhausts, manifolds and thermally loaded parts.
  • Chassis parts, dampers, rims and machinery on cars and motorcycles.
  • Science fiction and mecha models, robots, weapons, technical detail on figures.
  • Airbrush and brush alike — the lacquer dries quickly and gives an unusually smooth metal surface.

Tips for working with a metallic and with a lacquer

The metallic pigment settles to the bottom, so stir the bottle thoroughly before use and during work as well, otherwise you get an uneven, grainy surface. A metallic looks best on a smooth, well-sanded base, ideally over a primer; every scratch and fingerprint is instead accentuated under a metal shade. Metal shades are also harder to overspray and to mask, so apply them at the very end of the painting sequence. A lacquer is more aggressive to plastic than an acrylic: spray thin coats with time to flash off in between, preferably over a primer, and never one thick coat. A lacquer must not go onto uncured acrylic or enamel, as it would dissolve them. The opposite order works well: fully dried lacquer is a durable base under enamel paints and washes.

Who it is for

For modelers who want a realistic metal look, from bare metal surfaces on aircraft through car engines to science fiction hardware. Because of the chemistry of the lacquer and the need for ventilation it suits more experienced modelers with a setup for spraying.

A lacquer paint — a flammable liquid with strong fumes. Work in a well-ventilated area or at an extraction booth, use a respirator with a filter for organic vapors and protect your eyes and skin. Keep it out of the reach of children and away from sources of ignition.

FAQ

It is not. It is a shade from the Tamiya Color Lacquer Paint line, that is a lacquer. It has different chemistry and a different thinner than an acrylic: it is thinned with the Tamiya LP-10 lacquer thinner, not with X-20A or X-20.

With the Tamiya LP-10 lacquer thinner. Neither water nor acrylic thinner works: they would curdle the paint instead of thinning it.

Not over uncured acrylic or enamel, as the lacquer would dissolve them. It is safe to spray the lacquer onto bare sanded plastic, best of all over a primer. Conversely, acrylics and enamels go on well over fully dried lacquer.

Most often because it was not stirred enough (the metallic pigment settles to the bottom) or because the base was rough. Stir the paint thoroughly and apply it in thin coats onto a smoothly sanded, ideally primed surface.
