About product

Tamiya LP-65 Rubber Black, lacquer finish, 10 ml

LP-65 Rubber Black is a shade from the Tamiya Color Lacquer Paint range, that is a lacquer, not an acrylic and not an enamel. The package holds 10 ml and the thinner is the lacquer Tamiya LP-10; neither X-20A (acrylics) nor X-20 (enamels) works here. The shade is called rubber black for good reason: it is a matte black markedly shifted toward gray that imitates rubber. This is a model paint, not a kit.

Why pure black does not belong on tires

This is the main reason a shade like this exists at all. Real rubber is not black; it is dark gray, matte and in daylight it looks rather dusty. When a tire, the running surface of a track or a seal is sprayed pure black, the model immediately looks like plastic with paint on it: the area is too deep and dead, the shape, the grooves and the texture get lost on it and in scale it looks crude. Rubber Black solves that problem, because a black lightened toward gray and knocked back to matte keeps a realistic impression of rubber even on a small model.

Use

  • The tires of cars, motorcycles, trucks and aircraft wheels.
  • Rubber running surfaces and the tires of the road wheels of tanks and tracked vehicles.
  • Seals, rubber strips, boots, hoses and lines.
  • Rubber accessories of figures and equipment (masks, grips, pads).
  • Airbrush and brush; the matte surface is an ideal base under dust pigments.

Working tips and safety

A lacquer is more aggressive to plastic than an acrylic, so spray thin coats with flash-off time in between, ideally over a primer. Do not apply the lacquer over uncured acrylic or enamel, as it would dissolve them. With soft vinyl tires particular care applies: not every rubber will hold the paint, so test the adhesion first in a hidden place and degrease the part beforehand. The result takes the finishing touch of a gray-brown pigment at the edges of the tread and a light highlighting of the raised relief very well.

Who it is for

For builders of cars, motorcycles, tanks, aircraft and civilian vehicles, everywhere there is rubber and where pure black would kill the realism. Because of the chemistry of a lacquer it suits modelers who know how to work with solvent-based paints and have a ventilated workplace.

A lacquer finish, a flammable liquid with strong fumes. Work in a well ventilated space or at a spray booth, use a respirator with a filter for organic vapors and protect your eyes and skin. Keep out of the reach of children and away from sources of ignition.

FAQ

It is not. It is a lacquer from the Tamiya Color Lacquer Paint range. It is thinned with Tamiya LP-10 lacquer thinner, not with acrylic X-20A or enamel X-20.

Because real rubber is not black; it is dark gray and matte. Pure black on a model looks like painted plastic and the area loses its depth and texture. That is exactly why Rubber Black is lightened toward gray and knocked back to matte.

Not always. Soft vinyl compounds can repel the paint or make it crack. Degrease the part first and test the adhesion in a hidden place, and only then paint the whole tire.

Not over uncured acrylic or enamel, because the lacquer would dissolve them. Apply it to bare plastic or a primer. Over a fully dried lacquer, on the other hand, acrylic and enamel effects and pigments go on without trouble.
