About product

Surfaces Shadower — a liquid pigment for shading areas

This Lifecolor product from the Liquid Pigments Washes range is a liquid pigment, that is, pigment mixed into a carrier fluid. Once dry, a fine pigment deposit stays on the surface that can be worked on further — rubbed out, weakened or built up with another layer. The Surfaces Shadower shade is built for shading areas through: it is meant to turn an even color into a surface that has darker and lighter places.

The wiping decides the result

The pigment settles at the bottom, so shake and stir the contents thoroughly before every use — otherwise you will lay on mostly carrier fluid with no colorant. Then you work on a small area at a time: lay it on with a soft brush, let it go tacky and wipe the excess off with a cloth, a piece of foam or a dry flat brush. The wiping is the whole technique. Quick and thorough wiping leaves only a hint on the model; careful wiping after a longer pause leaves a strong shadow.

Proceed in layers. One heavy application looks forced and is hard to correct; three weak ones in a row give a depth you can stop at any time. Leave the surface undisturbed between layers and judge the result in daylight and from a distance.

How it differs from a classic wash

A classic wash works mainly by capillary action: it flows into engraved lines and recesses and brings out the detail. A liquid pigment works with the whole area — it settles even where there is no recess, and once dry it can be manipulated mechanically. The two techniques complement each other well; you just need to know what to expect from each.

Use

  • Shading larger flat areas through, where they look uniform after spraying.
  • Suggesting the places where dirt holds on a model and where light does not reach.
  • Muting a base coat that is too clean or too saturated.
  • Preparing the base for further weathering steps.

Who the color is for

It will suit modelers who have already mastered basic spraying and want to give a surface depth without an airbrush. It is usable on vehicles, aircraft and ships — the result is decided not by the subject but by how strongly you leave the pigment on the area.

Keep out of the reach of children. Close the bottle carefully after use and shake it again before the next application. Try a new procedure out on a test piece, not straight on the model.

FAQ

Yes, and thoroughly. Pigment in a liquid suspension settles at the bottom, so without shaking you will lay on mainly carrier fluid and the effect will barely show.

It depends mainly on when and how you wipe the excess off. The sooner and the more thoroughly, the finer the result. That is why it makes sense to start weak and layer.

No. A wash brings out mainly the engraved lines and recesses it flows into. A liquid pigment settles on a smooth area as well and can be rubbed out further once dry.

To a degree yes, by going over it with a clean soft brush or a cloth. A more reliable safeguard, though, is a test off the model.
