A light gray ballast with a medium grain, a tub of 945 cm³. The color of a freshly tamped granite bed.
Responsibility details are not available.
The lightest of the gray shades looks like a bed shortly after repair: the grain has not yet had time to turn gray from brake dust and oil stains. On a layout it therefore serves where you want to show a recent visit by a track gang, or on the contrary as a base which you age yourself by toning it gradually.
Apply the layer thinly twice rather than heavily once. The first dose fills the space between the ties, the second shapes the sides of the embankment into an even slope. Anyone in a hurry who pours it all at once usually ends up with little heaps that slide away under the brush.
It is a good idea to unify a fixed bed at the end: a very thin dark paint drawn into a brush almost dry emphasizes the recesses and leaves the tops of the grains light. In the middle of the track, where oil drips down, it pays to add a narrow darker stripe. This single detail turns a light bed from new material into a line in use.
A light ballast suits places off the railroad too, for instance a gravel driveway to a cottage or an area where stone is transshipped from a truck bed. In both cases a layer as thick as a sheet of paper is enough.
Before gluing, try the shade on a piece of cardboard. You will see how the color darkens once it has dried and you will decide whether you want to tone it before the first drop falls on the layout.
