Six lumberjacks with axes in a ratio of 1:87. Each figure is caught at a different moment of the work, from the first blow to a rest at a stump.
Responsibility details are not available.
Six men, six stages of one job. The first crouches to the undercut, the second is caught in a full swing and the third is just completing a swing. The fourth has propped his foot on a stump with an axe lying beside it, the fifth holds a hat in one hand and an axe in the other, and the sixth carries his tool thrown over his shoulder.
Felling with an axe is a motif that only makes sense on a layout where the timber is also hauled away. That is exactly why the set is usually placed by a spur into the forest, by a ramp with a stake car, by a sawmill at the edge of the board or by a steep slope down which logs were sent to the line.
Figures caught in motion ask for slightly different handling than standing ones. A swing only comes off when there is free space around the axe and when it is aimed at something definite, that is at a felled log or at a standing tree. Without a target the motion looks like a mistake.
The stump one of the figures leans on usefully anchors the set to the terrain. A few more can be added around it, along with some offcuts and a small heap of branches, and a mere group of figures becomes a cutting under work with a clear beginning and end to the job.
The size abbreviation given corresponds to a ratio of 1:87. Trees and bushes are sold in the same size, so there is no problem matching the figures to the growth they are to work in.
Felling by hand ended with the arrival of chainsaws, so the set will be appreciated above all by layouts that place themselves in the first half of the last century, and by all forest scenes built in that spirit.
