Medium Grey - a 3rd Generation acrylic

A neutral middle gray from the 3rd Generation acrylic range. It is an acrylic thinned with water or with acrylic thinner, not a lacquer and not an oil paint: AK interactive has shades with similar names in other ranges too, so when reordering, watch which branch you are taking the paint from. A middle gray is one of the most versatile tones on the bench: it leans neither warm nor cool and behaves predictably both on its own and as a component of mixes.

Use

• The base area of gray-painted equipment and a base under lighter coats.
• Darkening white or lightening black without a shift toward blue or brown.
• Preshading and suggesting panels, where black would look too harsh.
• Toning down a shade that is too saturated: a small amount of gray knocks the chroma back without dirtying the shade.

Thinning and application

Thin the paint for the airbrush gradually and check the ratio on a scrap rather than straight on the model: the consistency varies with the pressure and with the nozzle, and you can always thin further, but thickening again is harder. For the brush leave the paint thicker and lay it on in more thin coats; one heavy coat floods the engraved detail and pulls to the edges as it dries. Shake the bottle thoroughly before every use, as the pigment in acrylics settles to the bottom. Keep removing dried paint from the neck, otherwise the cap stops sealing and the paint in the bottle thickens.
