Intermediate Blue ANA 608 / FS 35164 – Mr.Paint acrylic paint

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. Mr.Paint is a Slovak manufacturer known mainly for its lacquer line for the airbrush, but this shade belongs to its water-thinnable Aqua acrylic line – it is thinned with water or the acrylic thinner of the same manufacturer, not with lacquer thinner. It comes in a small dropper bottle and the manufacturer states a volume of 17 ml.

What the color belongs to

Watch the name: although Intermediate Blue is sold alongside several grays, it is not a gray but a blue. ANA is the American system of aircraft color designations of the Second World War period and ANA 608 Intermediate Blue is the medium blue of the side surfaces in the American three-tone naval scheme: dark Sea Blue on the upper surfaces, Intermediate Blue as the transitional band along the fuselage sides and the fin, and white or a light color on the underside. The shade therefore rarely stands alone – for the whole scheme you also need the dark Sea Blue and white.

Use

• It sprays from an airbrush practically straight from the bottle; with fine nozzles it can be thinned with water or acrylic thinner.
• It is usable with a brush as well – on small areas and touch-ups of the side bands.
• It dries fast to a smooth satin surface onto which decals and washes can be applied straight away.
• Make the transition between the blue bands soft, with the airbrush held closer to the surface and at lower pressure.
• A practical aid with FS codes: the first digit gives the sheen – 1 gloss, 2 semi-gloss, 3 flat. The final sheen will be adjusted by the closing clear coat anyway.

Do not confuse it with the grays

Mr.Paint also offers the American grays Haze Grey (FS 36270) and Gunship Grey (FS 36118) – those belong to modern jets, not to propeller machines of the Second World War. If you are building an American naval aircraft of the 1940s, reach for this blue, not for a gray.

The paint comes in a bottle, it is not a kit. Use an airbrush in a ventilated room and do not inhale the mist. Keep out of the reach of children and close the bottle carefully after use.
