About product

MSN-02 Zeong, a Bandai kit from the Gundam range

This kit from the Japanese brand Bandai covers the mobile suit MSN-02 Zeong, one of the most striking machines in the whole Gundam universe. The model is supplied unassembled, the parts sit on sprues and nippers and patience are all you need to finish it. The scale is not given in the product name, so go by the information on the packaging.

The real subject

In the story of the first Gundam series the Zeong is a prototype built in the closing stage of the war, a machine developed with the emphasis on firepower at the expense of mobility. Its characteristic features are a massive upper body, a head that can be detached as a fighting unit of its own, and arms joined to the body only by cable runs, so that they can be released and controlled at a distance. The machine never got legs, which the story allowed for, since in weightless space it had no need of them. It is exactly that unfinished state that made it an icon recognized even by someone who has never seen the series.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off a little way from the molding with nippers and level the remains of the stub with a second cut, which will keep the plastic from whitening. Any white marks left by the cut can be leveled with a fine sanding file or a polisher. With kits like these the separation of colors is usually solved in the plastic itself, so the model looks good even unpainted, but picking out the engraved lines with a wash and a unifying matte or satin varnish will help it a great deal. If you are going to paint, try the assembly dry first and paint in subgroups, so that the parts still fit together once they have been sprayed. On the long arm joints, see to it that the cable runs are nowhere pulled taut.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of mobile suits from the classic Gundam range
  • modelers who want to build and do not have to paint right away
  • anyone looking for a striking and easily recognized shape for a display case
  • fans who will appreciate fidelity to the original look of the machine

The model is supplied unassembled. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Bandai kits from the Gundam range tend to be designed to click together, where glue is not needed. For this particular set, go by the instructions in the package.

You do not. The parts are usually separated by color in the plastic itself. Picking out the engraved lines and a matte varnish will move the look on a great deal, though.

The scale is not given in the product name, so check it on the packaging.

Modeling nippers, a sharp knife and a fine file to level the remains of the stubs are enough.
