Antique Rose - an Abteilung 502 acrylic paint

Antique Rose is a modeling acrylic paint from the Abteilung 502 brand. It belongs to the brand's acrylic line, not to its better known oil line: it is thinned with water, dries quickly and once dry can be painted over with further coats without risk. The name refers to a muted dusty rose tone, that is a shade from the classic artist's palette, which in modeling finds a use wherever a pure pink would look too raw.

Use

• flesh transitions on figures, where a rose tone is blended into the cheeks, lips and knuckles,
• fabrics, seat padding and interior details of historical vehicles,
• weathered shades of render and walls on diorama buildings,
• mixing into flesh and earth tones, to which it adds warmth without raising the saturation.

Thinning and mixing

The paint is thinned with water or an acrylic thinner, never with mineral spirits or an oil thinner. Shake before use; the pigment sinks to the bottom. Muted shades of this kind behave rather like a glaze in thin coats, so on a dark base more coats are needed than on a light one. It pays to apply them over a light base.
