About product

Aber photo-etched narrow welds

This is neither a kit nor a finished part for a particular model, but a general-purpose blank. It is a photo-etched metal sheet on which imitations of narrow weld beads with their characteristic wavy texture are carried in long strips. The modeler cuts the length needed off the strip and glues it onto the joint of two parts, so that the impression of a welded seam results. The variant designated narrow is finer than the basic range of welds and suits secondary and less massive joints. It is made by the Polish firm Aber, a long-standing specialist in photo-etched accessories for plastic models.

Use

  • Cut off a strip of weld the length of the joint, or make it up from shorter sections.
  • Sand the surface underneath smooth so that the weld sits down with no gap.
  • Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) applied section by section, so that you have time to settle the strip.
  • On curves press the strip down gradually and shape it with a toothpick or blunt tweezers.
  • The transition at the edges can be refined with a small amount of putty and sanded once dry.

Where it is useful

Above all on military vehicles with welded hulls and turrets, where the welds are one of the most conspicuous features of the surface, and further on ship superstructures, industrial structures and dioramas. The advantage over shaping a weld from putty or from melted plastic is regularity - the bead has the same pattern and width along its whole length.

Who it is for

For more advanced modelers who work with photo-etched parts and want their welds clean and repeatable. Suitable also as a complement to a set of details otherwise under way.

Photo-etched metal has sharp edges and margins - handle with care. Cyanoacrylate glue is irritating and bonds skin, so work carefully and ventilate. Keep out of the reach of small children.

FAQ

A photo-etched strip has the same width and pattern along its whole length, so the result is regular and repeatable. Putty is shaped by hand and calls for more experience.

The name gives no scale. What decides is the width of the bead against your model; the narrow weld variant is most often used on military vehicles in larger scales.

With cyanoacrylate glue, that is super glue. Apply it in shorter sections so that you manage to settle the strip and press it down.

Yes, a thin photo-etched strip can be shaped. On curves press it down gradually with a blunt tool and glue it section by section.
