An off-white is a white with the sharpness taken out of it, that is, a shade a touch more subdued than a pure white gives. On a model it is used where a surface should read as white but should not glare: on older finishes weathered by service, on light interiors, on canvas and ship sails, on the plaster of buildings in a diorama. With no standard number in the name it is a shade defined in words, so compare the paint with the real subject or with your documentation yourself; the manufacturer gives no standard designation for it.
Light shades cover slowly, because their pigment lets light through. Apply it in several thin coats, therefore, and give the paint time between them, otherwise ridges will build up on the edges and the fine drawing of the seams will be flooded. A light base underneath shortens the job noticeably. Free the model of grease and dust before painting and let it dry; on a greasy surface an acrylic layer holds only in appearance and comes away with the masking tape when it is peeled off. Mix the paint in the bottle right down to the bottom, so that settled pigment returns into it, and thin it with the thinner intended for this range; the thinning ratio and the pressure in the airbrush are given by the manufacturer in the instructions on the packaging.
A subdued white takes further work gratefully. It stands up to toning in the last coats, a darker filling of the seams and a dry brush on the edges sit well on it, and it does not stay deadly flat the way a completely pure white does. It also proves itself as a light surface under later aging, because dust and dirt stand out on it without overpowering the shade.
For modelers who paint with an airbrush and with a brush and want a white without the sharp gloss of newness. The bottle contains 17 ml of paint, and thinner and other accessories are not included, unless stated otherwise.
