The joke of this group lies in the balance of forces. There are five figures, but only one of them is working, while the remaining four stand around and supervise. A barrel completes them, something to lean on comfortably. The scene can be placed almost anywhere, because everybody knows the situation in which more experts than shovels gather around a hole.
An extensive layout will take several places where a viewer smiles. It is exactly such small things that visitors remember longer than a perfectly executed stretch of track. The advantage of this subject is that it needs no explanation at all: four onlookers around one worker speak for themselves and work by a road, at an excavation and in the yard of a warehouse.
The figures are reduced to a ratio of 1:87, that is to the size the great majority of layouts use. Put the barrel in the middle of the knot, so that it is clear it forms a natural support, and set the working figure so that it is visible from every side.
Leave the group looser than would seem natural: onlookers usually stand slightly apart and turned to the side, not in a tight circle. If you add a shovel set down or a small heap of earth to the scene, the whole joke gains a fixed point and stops reading as a chance gathering of figures.
