A primer paint goes on as the first coat over a cleaned and degreased model surface. It unifies a base made up of different materials, gives the following coats better adhesion and, above all, shows what is lost on a bare surface: unsanded seams, scratches and fingerprints. They are easy to put right as long as the final shade is not yet on the model.
RAL 8012 is an established red-brown shade from the European RAL color standard, so it is the same every time and can be matched again later. Besides its role as a base, red-brown also suits an underlayer beneath chipped paint: when the top shade is carefully rubbed back at an edge or applied over a masking medium, the darker tone shows through from below and the surface stops looking flat.
Stir the contents of the package properly before use, as the pigment settles at the bottom during storage. Choose the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions for this range; if you are mixing it with paints of other ranges, try it first on a spare piece of plastic. Apply in thin coats and let each one become tacky, as one heavy coat floods the detail and dries unevenly. Close the container immediately after use and keep it dry and away from frost.
Anyone who does not want to paint a model straight onto a bare surface will reach for it, whether they build vehicles, aircraft or figures. A model, thinner, tools and an airbrush are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
