A side ratio of roughly three to five makes this a material where the difference between the two orientations is noticeable but not fundamental. It suits places where an element should look sturdy without dominating: the frames of doors and hatches, posts, cross members and medium-sized stiffeners.
It is shortened by scoring along a ruler and snapping it over a sharp edge; with an asymmetrical section, score the groove from both sides, otherwise the break wanders. A thin cement will secure the joint, wicking by capillary action into the contact surface.
With repeating parts such as the rungs of a ladder or the posts of a railing, it pays to prepare a simple stop jig from an offcut of a thicker profile. Pieces measured by hand always differ a little and the irregularity shows clearly on a finished structure. One piece is 35 centimeters long.
For ladders and railings it works well to glue both uprights on a board, place spacer offcuts between them and add all the rungs at once. The spacing then comes out regular without measuring each part separately.
