An H-section profile of 1.5 millimeters. A beam section with two flanges and a web in the middle.
Responsibility details are not available.
An H section has two parallel flanges joined by a perpendicular web. It is the shape of real steel beams, and that is exactly why it reads convincingly on a model at once. Gluing it up from flat strips would mean three gluing operations with the risk that the web ends up neither centered nor square.
It is best to cut both flanges first and the web only at the end, otherwise the profile pinches as it is cut through. A flat file with a fine cut trues up the burr that forms in the inner corners. It is joined with liquid cement, which draws itself into the contact area.
On lattice structures it pays to prepare a template on paper and lay the beams onto it, and only then to glue. A structure assembled by eye almost always ends up twisted, and on a finished model that shows more than any other inaccuracy. One piece measures 35 centimeters.
On industrial structures it pays to combine beams of several sizes. A structure made from a single size looks monotonous, whereas real buildings have main beams heavier than the secondary ones.
