An extruded profile of white polystyrene, H section, 2.0 mm high, 35 centimeters long. On this shape the flanges are as wide as the profile is high, which is what sets it apart from the slimmer I section, which has a branch of its own.
The most common mistake when building structures is to reach for a heavier profile than would be right. The model does gain strength, but the structure looks armored. The check is quick: multiply the height of the profile by the divisor of the scale. Two millimeters times seventy-two gives 144 millimeters, which is an entirely ordinary ceiling beam of the kind that carries the roof of a hall. The same profile times thirty-five comes out at 70 millimeters, that is a small frame member suitable for a railing or a light platform, not for a main structure. And times twenty-four only 48 millimeters are left, which is more like a door frame.
From that comes the reversed rule: the greater the reduction, the larger the profile for the same structure. Anyone who builds a crane in one to thirty-five and uses a two-millimeter H will get a delicate lattice; at a reduction of one to seventy-two the same material would give a solid main beam.
The profile is cut with a saw or with pliers, the ends are trued up with a file and the joints hold with solvent cement.
A lattice structure can be put together from these profiles as well. Make the main chords from this shape and the infill diagonals from a smaller L section, because that is exactly how real lattice work is designed, and the difference in the thickness of the members makes the structure legible. Glue the joints on a board with a drawn grid, or the structure will twist. What is left of the profile suits stiffeners and column bases.
