The beam profile faithfully copies the cross section of rolled steel — two horizontal flanges held in the middle by a vertical web. This is exactly the shape you need as soon as a crane runway, the frame of a factory hall, a truss bridge or the support of a roofed platform starts to rise on a diorama. An industrially extruded piece looks more convincing than two glued strips, because the corners between the web and the flange are smoothly radiused just as they are on the real thing.
The height of the section is 3.2 millimeters, the strip is 35 centimeters long and one strip makes up the item. The light shade of the material is an advantage during building: on a white surface you can see at once whether a joint has closed or whether it is asking for one more stroke of the file.
The cleanest division is managed by a sharp scalpel led along a metal ruler. You score both flanges, break the piece off carefully and level the end with a fine file. The joint holds with liquid cement for polystyrene, which is drawn into the seam by capillary action; the parts weld to each other and no deposit is left on the surface. The finished structure takes a coat of ordinary modeling acrylic even without a special primer layer.
Draw the plan of the structure on paper and glue directly over it. The uprights will then stay perpendicular and the whole trusswork will not twist as it dries. It pays to keep the remains of the strip, because shorter lengths always come in handy for braces.
Profiles of this type do not belong to a single scale. Whether a beam reads correctly on a model is decided by comparison with the parts around it, so it pays to hold an offcut against the half-built scene before you start cutting to size. More experienced builders keep two neighboring sizes to hand for that reason.
