Half Round 2.5 mm Wide

A round rod cut in half has the advantage that it can be laid straight onto a surface with no need to pack it out. The eye still sees a cylindrical shape even though only half of the material stands out. That is exactly why it is used for elements that genuinely run along the surface on the real thing: grab handles, cable runs, pipe routes or raised edging.

Working with the profile

Lay a longer run on dry and mark its route with a pencil so that it does not slip while being glued. Apply solvent glue with a brush at the foot of the profile, press it down and leave it alone, since moving it while it sets leaves a dull mark. You will not force a curved run cold, but brief warming softens the material enough for it to be led around the curve of a fuselage or a turret. Sand the ends away to nothing, otherwise they will look cut off.

Typical use

It proves itself on the grab handles of vehicle bodies, on the reinforcing ribs of tankers, on door framing, on the gutter strips of buildings and when repairing a broken-off detail, where you replace the original part with a new piece of the same width.

It is bare white material with no paint and no printing; the builder chooses the final finish.

Compared with wire and with round rod

Grab handles can also be made from wire, but that has to be set into drilled holes and bends under rough handling. A half round profile has no such problem: it holds over its whole face and does not shift under normal handling. Solid round rod, on the other hand, is hard to align on a flat surface and tends to rotate while the glue sets.

It also proves itself in repairs. When the original raised element breaks off a model, it is usually quicker to sand the whole thing away and replace it with a new piece of the same width than to try to glue two tiny fragments back together.
