About product

Raw Umber / Industrial Earth - AK Interactive Oil Paint (20 ml)

Raw umber is an oil paint for modelers in a tube with a volume of 20 ml. It is not an acrylic or an enamel - the binder is oil, and it is thinned and blended with odorless thinner or mineral spirits, not with water. The shade is a dark, cooler earth brown; in painting it is the most used shading pigment of all, and the same holds in modeling. This is a modeling paint, not a kit.

Why oils in particular

Oil dries very slowly, easily over several days - and that is its main advantage. The paint stays workable for a long time, so it can be blended, softly diffused, muted and gradually fine-tuned until the effect is right. Oil is therefore not used as a covering coat but for shading, weathering and effects.

Use

  • Universal shading - picking out panel lines, rivets, edges and every recess.
  • Earth, mud and deposits of dirt on suspensions, running gear and the lower parts of vehicles.
  • Industrial weathering - worn machinery, tanks, railroad cars, equipment after long service.
  • Muting a finish that looks too fresh: a thin glaze of umber takes the toy-like look away at once.
  • A base tone under rust and under layers of dust.

The Difference from Raw Sienna

Umber and sienna are a pair worth keeping together. Raw Umber is darker and cooler - it suits shadow, dirt and depth. Raw Sienna is lighter and warmer, tuned toward orange - it suits dust, earth and warm tones. By combining the two you will handle most earth effects: umber for the shadow, sienna for the light.

Practical tips

Apply it to a cured varnished surface from which the excess can be blended away cleanly. Let a drop of the paint be drawn off on cardboard or a paper towel first - oil exudes binder, and without that step a greasy stain will remain around the mark. Only then pick it up with a brush. Draw the excess away with a clean brush lightly dampened in thinner, with the strokes following the direction of running water or the airflow.

Who the paint is for

For anyone who does weathering - military vehicles, aircraft, dioramas and figures. If you are buying your first oil, this shade is the most sensible place to start.

Safety: it is thinned with solvent thinners (mineral spirits, odorless thinner) - ventilate, protect your skin and eyes, keep out of the reach of children. Thinners are flammable, so do not work with them near open flame. Thinner is not included in the package.

FAQ

Raw Umber is a darker and cooler earth brown - shadow, dirt, depth. Raw Sienna is lighter and warmer, tuned toward orange - dust, earth, warm tones. They complement each other well.

No, it is an oil paint. It is thinned and blended with odorless thinner or mineral spirits. Water does not work.

That is a property of oil and at the same time its advantage. While the paint is still wet the effect can be blended, diffused and fine-tuned - with fast-drying paints you do not have that option.

Yes, we recommend it. Oil exudes binder, and straight from the tube it will leave a greasy oil stain around the mark. A drop left on cardboard for a few minutes applies and blends considerably better.
