A universal masking set from the universal mask line by Armycast. Annuli are cut precisely into self-adhesive vinyl film, that is rings with a constant band width of 1.5 mm, in graded diameters. These are neither decals nor a part of a model but an aid for the airbrush: the mask is stuck on the surface and the paint is sprayed over it, so that the resulting element lies directly in the finish.
Rings come in useful wherever a sharply bounded circular outline is needed. Typically these are the color borders of national insignia and tactical markings, distinguishing bands on propeller spinners and on engine cowlings, bands on a fuselage, instrument bezels or the rims of wheels. Thanks to the constant band width the line comes out equally thick all round, which is practically impossible to achieve freehand. The geometric shape is not tied to a particular type of subject or to a scale; all that matters is the diameter you need on the model, so the set finds use on aircraft, vehicles and ships alike.
The surface of the model has to be smooth, degreased and fully cured before the mask goes on. Lift the mask off the backing sheet with sharp tweezers, lay it in place and press the edges down carefully with a toothpick or a wooden stick, so that no paint runs under the film. Spray several very thin coats; paint laid on heavily forms a ridge at the edge of the mask that shows once it is uncovered. Remove the film shortly after it has dried, pulling sideways at an angle and at a shallow angle to the surface. Vinyl holds more reliably on a smooth gloss finish than on a rough matte one; excessive tack can be reduced by sticking the mask briefly to a clean cloth.
