About product

RLM 76 Version 2 - AIR (AK interactive, 3rd Generation acrylic)

RLM 76 Version 2 is a water-thinnable acrylic from the AIR aircraft sub-line of the 3rd Generation acrylic line by AK interactive. The bottle (17 ml) is intended for brush and airbrush alike, and once dry the surface is matte and durable. Note: this is a modeling paint, not a kit - no model is included in the package.

About the RLM 76 shade

RLM 76 Lichtblau is the light blue-gray of the undersides of German aircraft. It comes in from 1941 and stays to the end of the war - you find it on the undersides of wings, fuselage and tail surfaces, and on later machines it was carried high up the sides of the fuselage, where it formed the base for mottling in darker shades. It is one of the most used colors for Luftwaffe modelers.

Why two versions exist - and what Version 2 is

RLM 76 was not one unchanging color. There were several officially approved formulations and paint makers mixed them according to the raw materials they happened to have. On top of that came the wartime economy: late substitute formulations, variation between batches and differences between individual factories. The result is that RLM 76 on period machines ranges from a cool light blue-gray to tones that go markedly toward gray or green - and all of them were RLM 76.

The manufacturer therefore does not carry RLM 76 as a single shade but offers several variants: the base shade, this Version 2 and a separate late-war variation. Version 2 is therefore not an improved or corrected version of the old paint - it is a second period variant of the same shade, existing alongside the first. Which one you choose depends on the particular machine, factory and period you are building; the guide is period photographs and color profiles, not a match of numbers.

Use

  • The undersides of German aircraft - wings, fuselage, tail surfaces.
  • The sides of the fuselage on later machines as a base under mottling in darker shades.
  • An airbrush after thinning with the acrylic thinner of the same brand; details and touch-ups with a brush.
  • A base for subsequent shading - washes, glazes and preshading hold well.
  • Combination with the other RLM shades from the same aircraft sub-line.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of German aircraft of the Second World War, especially for builders of later machines, where RLM 76 covers a large part of the surface. Also suitable for those who want to tell machines from different factories and periods apart by variants of the shade.

The paint is a water-thinnable acrylic with a low odor. Work in a ventilated room and use extraction and respiratory protection when spraying with an airbrush. Keep out of the reach of children. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use.

FAQ

It is not. It is the second period variant of the RLM 76 shade, existing alongside the base one. RLM 76 was not one unchanging color - there were several officially approved formulations and makers mixed them according to the raw materials available. Late substitute formulations and differences between batches deepened the variation further.

It depends on the particular machine, the factory that built it and the period. Besides the base shade the manufacturer carries this second variant and a separate late-war variation. Follow the period photographs and color profiles of your machine rather than a match of numbers - in practice the shades differed.

To the undersides of German aircraft - the undersides of wings, fuselage and tail surfaces. On later machines it was carried high up the sides of the fuselage too, where it served as a base for mottling in darker shades.

A water-thinnable acrylic from the 3rd Generation line. It is not a lacquer or an enamel - do not use nitro thinner. With a brush it is applied straight from the bottle; for an airbrush it is thinned with the acrylic thinner of the same brand.
