RLM 79 17 ml.

The color

RLM 79 is a sand tone tuned toward yellow-brown from the German RLM aircraft standard. It is associated above all with machines deployed in North Africa and the Mediterranean, where it formed the base color of the upper surfaces. Over light terrain it was meant to dissolve the silhouette of an aircraft into the background, so that even a large fuselage was lost under it from above.

Where you will use it

On the upper surfaces of models of German aircraft in desert finish. The layout of the colors and the transition to the lower surfaces differed from machine to machine, so follow the references for the particular kit. The olive green RLM 80, which usually goes with this shade, is carried by the same range under the code RC948, so you can put the whole scheme together from one palette. The paint also serves wherever you need a muted sand without an orange cast, that is on vehicles, the gear of figures or the terrain of a diorama.

How to work with the paint

Stir the contents of the bottle well before use, as the pigment settles at the bottom and unstirred paint covers unevenly. Wash and degrease the parts; paint peels off a greasy surface. Apply in several thin coats and let them set up between one another, as one heavy coat drowns engraved lines. Light sand tones cover worse than dark ones, so lay the area in with a light primer first. Apply masks and masking tape before spraying and pull them off only once the paint has dried, slowly and at an angle.
