RLM 81 VERSION 3 – AIR

RLM 81 version 3, an acrylic paint from AK interactive

A water-thinnable acrylic paint in a bottle for aircraft models. The version number is essential information with this shade: surviving paint samples from the late period of the war do not agree with one another, which is why the manufacturer lists RLM 81 as three separate products, versions 1, 2 and 3. All three are listed separately and are not interchangeable, so choose the version in advance according to the documentation for the particular machine.

Use

• Shake the bottle before work until you can feel the mixing ball moving freely. With dark shades the pigments settle to the bottom, and paint that has not been mixed through sprays differently from the way it looks on a color chart.
• When you thin the shade or fine-tune it by mixing, note down the ratio. Making up the same mixture in the middle of a half-finished camouflage without a written ratio practically never works.
• For one model it is better to buy one bottle with some to spare. A bottle of a different RLM 81 version bought later will not match, even though it carries the same shade number.
• For multi-tone schemes of the late period, mix only small quantities on the palette and directly in the airbrush cup, so that you do not have to replicate the mixture.

Who the paint is for

For modelers who build German aircraft of the late period and want control over the interpretation of the shade instead of a single given version. The paint is an acrylic thinnable with water or with an acrylic thinner; the Real Colors lacquer line from the same manufacturer carries the same shade numbers, but it is a different chemistry with its own thinner and the two cannot be mixed.

Spray in a ventilated space and with respiratory protection. Keep the bottle tightly closed, protect it from frost and keep it out of the reach of children.
