Rolling Pin Flagstone — a roller with a stone slab pattern

Stone slabs of irregular shape are a universal base: they work as the floor of a castle hall, a courtyard, a temple stairway and a figure base alike. The roller impresses slabs separated by joints of varying width into rolled-out modeling compound, that is a pattern that does not look machine-made and does not call for precise lining up the way cobblestones do.

From the impression to a floor

• Roll the compound out to an even thickness and impress the pattern in one pass.
• Do not cut the edges of the area against a ruler — an irregularly broken edge looks more natural on stone than a straight cut.
• Tilt a few slabs slightly or sink them; a settled floor is more believable than a perfectly flat surface.
• Once it has cured, fine sand or pigment can be poured into the joints and fixed with a thin binder.
• Scratch a crack or a missing corner of a slab into the soft compound with a pointed tool.

Painting stone

Stone is never a single color. Spread a neutral gray base across several slabs with a hint of brown, ocher and blue-gray, bring the area together with a thin wash and bring out the edges with drybrushing. Patches of damp by the walls, dust in the corners and lighter trodden paths across the middle of the room will give the floor a story.
