Space Dark Green - Quick Gen Color from AK interactive

A dark green from the Quick Gen Color acrylic range, which AK interactive aims at figures and gaming models. The binder is acrylic and it is thinned with water or with the medium from the same range. The shade is dark, saturated and cooler than olive - it works well as the base tone of large surfaces on which the highlights are then built.

Where the shade belongs and how it behaves

A dark green is the color of the main finish of armor, hulls and cloaks, but also of the ground under lighter greens. It covers over most grounds better than light tones, because a dark pigment does not have to overpower anything underneath. On its own, though, it closes the surface down - without highlighting the edges afterwards the model stays flat.

Dark shades in miniature: why black is replaced by gray

The modeling rule that a very dark gray is used instead of black has a simple reason: on a scaled-down model black has nowhere left to go. Once a shadow on the model reaches full black, all the detail inside it disappears and the eye has nothing to read. Dark greens are in much the same position - a saturated dark shade on a large surface swallows engraving, panel lines and fine edges alike. So work with it as a floor, not as a final surface: lighten the centers of the surfaces a little by adding a gray-green or ocher and keep the darkest tone for the recesses and transitions only. That gives the model depth without your having to reach for black, which on this color would only make a hole.
