A set of spatulas from the Japanese brand Mineshima intended for modeling work with filler and with modeling compounds. A spatula is the tool that in the workshop replaces improvising with a toothpick or an old knife, and the difference shows immediately: a thin flexible blade picks up exactly as much compound as is needed and, above all, is able to press it into a seam instead of smearing it around.
Where a spatula proves useful
Most often when filling the seams between the halves of a fuselage, a hull or a cowling. The filler is applied with a slight excess and the excess is drawn off at once, so that after drying there is considerably less sanding left and the fine details around stay intact. The second large field is modeling with epoxy compound, that is, shaping sails, straps, mud deposits and other elements that are in no kit.
Epoxy and similar compounds stick to dry metal. Lightly moisten the blade with water, or with water and a drop of dish soap, and the compound will slide over it. Draw the filler off at once, while it is soft, because once hardened all that remains is sanding. Clean the tools after work before the compound dries. Do not pry or twist with a spatula; the thin blade is built for pull and pressure across a surface, not for twisting.
For modelers who fill seams and want to spare themselves the sanding, and for anyone adding their own elements of modeling compound to models. The set also makes sense as a first step away from improvised tools toward tools built for this work.
