The plinth is based on MDF fiberboard, which unlike solid timber does not warp and holds its plane even after years in a display case. The surface is covered with black lacquer, so the board under the model visually steps back and the attention stays on what is standing on it. A lacquered surface is also easily wiped free of the dust that settles in a display case most of all around a model.
Ten by ten centimeters is a format for one figure with its base, a bust, a smaller vehicle or a small vignette of two figures. The square plan also suits aircraft models in the smaller scales set on a display stand, because spreading the area sideways gives the wings enough room. The free margin around the model is just as important as the model itself: without it the composition looks overcrowded.
The most reliable way is a pin: glue a wire peg into the underside of the figure or the chassis, drill a hole in the board and flood the joint with super glue. On heavier models a screw run in from below works well. If you want to turn the surface into terrain, reckon with the lacquered surface being smooth, so material will only hold on it once it has been roughened with abrasive paper.
