Gray with a warmer touch is the most universal tone of the whole earth palette. It matches quarried stone, granite outcroppings, a ballast bed and a stone wall whose mortar crumbled away long ago. Where a cold gray would look like plastic, this shade gives a surface the impression of real rock.

The procedure that has proved itself goes from the top down: first the whole casting is flooded with a heavily thinned tone, which runs into every crack, and only once it has dried out are the individual faces brought out with a thicker mixture. The hollows thereby stay darker and the edges lighter, which is exactly what the eye reads as stone in relief.

The stain is thinned with water and once applied it does not stay irremovable, so the result can be weakened at any time. The composition is non-toxic and without the smell of thinners, which suits work at a table in a living room. The bottle holds 118 milliliters, that is 4 fluid ounces.

Besides plaster, suitable bases are also foam compounds, wood and paper pulp. On a porous surface a higher consumption has to be allowed for, because the first layer disappears into the soaked base. Between the individual applications it is sensible to let a model dry overnight, since plaster castings hold damp considerably longer than they look.
